The next novel that he plans on writing will focus on those years of hunger, fear, and family tragedy, relating the stories of betrayal, and aiding the underground resistance in moving Jews and other refugees during this time. “The Dutch Winter” ends with the return of hope, the voyage across the North Atlantic in January, and eventual arrival in the haven of California where he and his family are able to escape Nazi-occupied Holland during WWII.

About The Book

Stories of Courage, Brotherhood, and the Human Spirit

Through war and peace, fear and faith, Albert Vande Steeg captures the strength of humanity. From the frozen streets of wartime Holland to the brotherhood of American police life, his stories reveal hope, resilience, and the power of compassion.

The Canopy: Stories Told In A Cop Bar

The Canopy was a cop bar, like no other. Here officers and detectives share stories, heartache, and dreams. It is a safe place away from the harsh realities of working a patrol beat or investigating the cruelties of life. The Canopy is where cops go to unwind after stressful events or difficult days. Being there with like-minded and understanding hearts makes healing and hope possible. The author is the president of the Ontario Police Museum. He worked the streets of Ontario as a foot beat officer, patrolman, detective, undercover narcotics, and as training officer. He saw and experienced the raw side of life. He walked with them during sad times and a life without hope. He worked with his comrades through the stress of dealing with politics and social upheavals, and the End of Watch for a fallen friend and faithful warrior.

The Dutch Immigrant: Adjusting to a New Culture

The Van Bemmel family left war torn Nederland to start a new life in the United States. Blending their Dutch culture into their new life created conflicts and required constant adjustments. The children learned to live in both cultures, one at school and with their new American friends and the other at home to maintain peace in the family. One son was drafted into the army, he did his tour of duty in Germany, the country that persecuted them in World War II. Another son joined the Marines and went to Vietnam.
The mother struggled with loneliness and returned to Holland, but eventually rejoined her family. In all the struggles of adapting the family remained steadfast and never compromised their ideals. Each found their peace in making choices to be American.

The Dutch Winter: Resisting the Nazi Occupation

This historical novel is about life during the Nazi occupation of The Netherlands. The brave women and men who fought in the Resistance become real people with hearts that experience fear but will not yield to Hitler. The Van Bemmell farm is occupied by twenty German soldiers, yet the family is willing to take the risk of aiding Jews. When starvation hits the cities are empty as people flock to the country to find food on the farms. The Van Bemmells know that everything can be divided and shared.

Grifters

All a grifter needs is a person with a trusting heart, or lax in their ways of life to swindle them out of their possessions. Grifters come in all walks of life—they might be clergy, truck drivers, investment counselors, entrepreneurs, or even in law enforcement. They come alongside and offer kind words and warm concern. Then, like a pickpocket, will relieve you of your hard-earned money.

Grifters tells the story of how these cunning swindlers connive to create trust and respect, while absconding with the victims’ money. Their connivery leaves the victim helpless and without hope of recovering what was lost.

    Readers’ Voices from Amazon

Before reading vande Steeg's book, The Dutch Winter, I couldn't imagine what the Nazi occupation was like for families in an occupied country. Most of the WWII stories I've read start around the time of an arrest and take readers to concentration camps. However, this book is different. It changed me, which is my criteria for a 5-star review. Authentic experience along with research based on the experiences of others who lived one day at a time during that terrible time make vande Steeg's book a compelling read. Living with that kind of fear and not just surviving, but thriving will inspire you to courage

Patti Townley-Covert A Family Committed to Courage

Loved this book. I read it in a little over two day, mostly because I couldn’t put it down. Well written and thoughtful first hand account of the nazi occupation of Holland. Covers the Dutch resistance to that occupation, but also covers one family as they struggle through the takeover and eventual liberation of their home and farm. The last part is a detailed account of the family as they make their way to California and their new home in America. Great read!

TS Montana Very real, and inspiring story

What an education this novel is! Yes, it's a novel but the story reads like first hand experience. It begins in 1936 with a young love-struck couple starting out in marriage but are abruptly turned up-side down by Hitler's invasion of Poland which quickly spread to their homeland of Holland. When the uninvited Germans take possession of their family farm, survival became a daily quest for this family now with two sons and another soon to be born. Within its pages we learn of the Dutch resistance and the near starvation conditions experienced throughout the land of quaint windmills and beautiful countryside.

Betty Hitler’s takeover and its human impact

A remarkably insightful book about the stark realities of being a cop, the ultimate price that can be paid, and how both the internal and external politics can put dedicated officers in harm's way. The stories and events told took place in the late 60s, yet jumping ahead to the 2020's, it's easy to see the damage that politics has caused to Law Enforcement. While thoroughly enjoying the stories, it was most interesting to see how law enforcement evolved from the late 60s to today. To Serve & Protect has been kicked to the curb by our elected officials, UNTIL THEY THEMSELVES are in danger. The book is a good read and quite well done!

    Jim Altfeld Politics Prevails

This novel gives the reader an in-depth idea of what it was like to live under Nazi occupation in the Netherlands. It also relates stories about the brave people in the resistance movement. Highly recommend this book!
